Staring down at the piece of paper, Rei's crimson eyes lifted once more to the front of the shrine with some sense of dread and hesitation... Maybe this was a bad idea. It would figure that name would be quite old. The sotoba had been nearly illegible and more traditional names were becoming more uncommon in a country that was continuing to take on more and more western influence. Still... To think that it would be tied to a local shrine of all things, was both intriguing and a somewhat unnerving, to say the least. Now shrines were nothing new in Japan. They were incredibly common, especially in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, which were centuries old. In fact, Rei had loved nothing more than to visit them growing up, but she had gone through some rather disturbing changes since coming to the former capital. Rei took note of the wooden sign and the shrine that was clearly showing it's age. The red paint of the Torii gate was worn from decades of weathering and the whole place was in general state of disrepair. Yet, even from this distance, Rei could make out the path that led to the main courtyard of the shrine. Despite all the small needed repairs, it still appeared to be in working order and was no doubt frequented by the locals of the area. It should have been no big deal. All she had to was walk right through the front gate.... so why wouldn't her feet move? Was it fear? Quite possibly. Then again, Rei hadn't set foot into a shrine or temple since before she had been cursed. To be honest, she wasn't even sure what happened to an Oddity that stepped on sacred land or holy landmarks. Would they just burst into flames? Or perhaps, they simply could not enter, due to the various barriers and seals that had been erected on the grounds? Shaking the worst case scenarios from her mind, Rei finally swallowed back her fears and took a single step across the threshold of the gate.... For several seconds, she didn't dare to open her eyes, fearing what would become of her. Fortunately, when she finally got the nerve to glance around, she discovered that she was not only on the premises, but had not come to any harm. Maybe there really was nothing to worry about. Well, she wasn't dead. That was some relief, but the day wasn't over yet. Honestly, the things she did in search of history. This assignment was going to give her heart attack if she didn't manage to calmed down. Although, it was hard to calm down when one was scared senseless of being recognized as inhuman, but in the back of her mind, Rei continued to remind herself that not all shrines had monks and not all monks were capable exorcist. Besides, she only had to stay here long enough to get some information about the history and family, and this whole history assignment would be in the bag. She'd have her always perfect grade and no one would ever know a fox had wandered into the shrine. Now,.... where was everyone? Rei's crimson eyes quickly swept the area around curiously, readying to run the first time the wind blew wrong, but few could blame her. This place was kind unnerving, for both human and oddity. "E-Excuse me?" Rei attempted nervously, stammering quite a bit at her attempt to call out. "I-Is anyone here?" Pulling her coat a little closer to her, that long white hair drifted over her shoulder, the long ponytail being tugged by the cool breeze. It stood out against the color of the turning leaves and pastel natural colors that surrounded the shrine, like new fallen snow. It wasn't an effect of the curse, but it might as well have been for the assistance it was in blending in with Japan society. | words: 647 tag: Yoshimune notes: none |
