Steve slowly wiped his hand down the cold stone slab that was his father's grave-

Out of all the places to rest...

Steve could feel his tailor-made leather shoes sinking into the wet dirt ground. He was in a public graveyard at the side of a hill which also served as a backyard for some insignificant monastery - a location that his father insisted on being buried at despite having the opportunity to have something many times grander.

Steve never understood why.

Placing the batch of ordered flowers in front of the grave, Steve stared at the vertically placed Japanese characters engraved into his father's grave-

This is...

His father was a writer, and this was his father's final unpublished piece... One that even Steve had not read until now-

"Coexistence.."

That was the name of the story... a story about a young rabbit with golden eyes. Steve shifted closer and began to read-

In the story, due to the strange color of the young rabbit's eyes, the other rabbits avoided and excluded it from many gatherings... Lonely and depressed, the golden-eyed rabbit left his home to seek love elsewhere.

Returning back home after very long travel, the now mid-aged rabbit found that nothing has changed - the alienation had begun again... but this time, the golden-eyed rabbit accepted it, and one day, while taking a walk just outside town, it came across an injured rabbit... one that it had never seen before.

This was when something incredible happened - the golden eyes that had caused all his past suffering and pain, saw through the magical disguise of the injured rabbit and revealed it for what it truly was - a snake demon in disguise. Shocked by the discovery, the golden-eyed rabbit immediately ran back to town to warn others of this calamity, but instead was labeled as heartless and exiled while the other rabbits ran to the demon's aid.

While the rabbits were at their most vulnerable, the snake demon manifested in its true form, and devoured every inhabitant in the town. Curious, the demon returned to the exiled golden-eyed rabbit and asked it how it felt... The rabbit replied, "Poi--

"Uh.. What."

That was it. Steve couldn't believe it - the story cut off right there - it was unfinished. What the hell?! Scanning the stone slab impatiently before standing up and checking the back only to find nothing, Steve went back to his previous squatting position and stared blankly at his father's grave for a while before letting out a deep sigh-

"Typical. I never understood you... Everything you did was illogical... Even you and mum... I mean.. how the hell did you even manage to get her to fall in love with you? Maybe with something magical like in your stories? Hah..."

Steve paused for a second to think- it wasn't like him to speak to an inanimate object as if it was alive, and just that was enough to make Steve feel odd. Shaking some dirt off his shoe, Steve stood up with a straight back to say his farewell-

"...I'll come over again some time."

With that, Steve began to make his way down the hill. It would be at least a twenty-minute walk to get to where his car was parked, only if he remembered where he left it though...

For most people, a graveyard was hardly the place to wander around. Many avoided them and certainly found in no pleasure in having to visit them outside of necessity when attending the occasional funeral. However, Rei had always been something of an odd little thing. She had a burning interest in history and with a recent report on the local figures, Rei had decided that the most sensible course of action was to go to the source. Graveyards were, after all, a treasure trove of information and history to those that knew what to look for.

As she strolled down the path outer pathway that wove through the various graves, a soft melody could be heard drifting over the still evening. Humming to herself was an old habit that Rei had, though it probably seemed a bit morbid considering the circumstances. Not that there was normally anyone around to care, but the female was certainly a site with that white hair trailing behind her, looking more spirit than human.

Fortunately, there was rarely anyone alive, though it probably wouldn't have been the first time that Rei had given someone a fright. Often it was unintentional... Well, for the most part. There were always the occasional trouble makers, but a few glowing balls of fire and a well-timed entrance were typically enough to send even the most skeptical cynic running for the hills. It often served them right, though Rei tried to avoid attention as much as possible, sometimes the fox in her tended to slip out and she simply couldn't help herself.

The more further Rei walked, the older the stones became, age and time having worn away at the inscriptions. This was what she had come all the way out here for, the source of Edo's past that held the stories that traced back before the war, before the influence of the west had taken root. Some were barely legible anymore, the family names scrawled of a possible noble family of merchants or lords. Rei couldn't say for sure, but in a name there lay a bounty of wealth and stories that were easily found in other records and writings.

Removing a notepad from her pocket, she quickly scratched down a few names with the pen before stashing them away once more into her coat pocket. Her gaze soon took note of a few old sotoba, however, that were leaned against a nearby marker. They were so aged that they were unreadable, but the temptation proved to much for Rei as she attempted to side step the dead flowers that had been left on the grave.

Taking the glasses from her coat pocket, she quickly slipped them on and began to remove some of the moss that had grown across the wooden grave marker. It was clearly an important find, but the mystery of what it said was more than Rei could bare.She had to know. Since her curse, there were few things left in the human world that truly grabbed her interest and made things were living, but the pursuit of knowledge was perhaps the one thing that really drove her these days.

Now, most civilians would have been a bit more cautious about handling something like a fallen grave markers. Rei, on the other hand, assumed she had little to fear from a ghost or disturbed spirit. After all, it wasn't like they could curse her as a certain fox had clearly beaten them to punch. Still, there had to be a way to find out what the writing said.... Maybe if she just changed the lighting....

Without thinking twice, Rei snapped her fingers and in that instance a couple balls of glowing blue-white flame ignited over her shoulder. It was a foolish move and a risky one if Rei was caught, but reason often meant little to an obsessed fox and right now, she needed to know. Forget good grades, this could have been the find of the century. What Rei seemed to be forgetting, however, was that glowing balls of fire in a cemetery tended to attract unwanted attention and painted an image right out of a Japanese legend.

As if in a photography studio, a blue rim light appeared from behind Steve to outline his contours in color - the shine was also clear and obvious due to the darkness that began to fill the horizon. Unlike a camera's flash however, the light not only remained consistent, but also carried with it a heat that can be felt from where Steve stood.

Steve immediately paused in his steps and stood still for a couple seconds.. sweat drops beginning to form on his forehead. Steve knew the usual supernatural ghost stories set in creepy places like graveyards... but aha... ahaha... they're just for kids right? Right...? Uh...

In truth just coming alone to a graveyard was already a huge achievement for Steve - an action that was way outside his usual comfort zone. Steve had a weak heart for anything paranormal, and this wasn't about to change anytime soon. In mental conflict with himself contemplating whether or not it would be a wise decision to turn around, Steve started to become very agitated-

"Nope."

In a burst of adrenaline, Steve sprinted as fast as he could, cracking fallen branches and crunching up dried leaves as he did. He did not stop, and he did not look back... While the chances are that it all had a logical explanation, Steve really didn't care - he just wanted to get the hell out of there.

I'm not scared... I'm just... cautious!

He told himself repeatedly as he dashed through the dirt road that led to the cemetery and onto the main staircase which led to the bottom of the hill. As he hastily descended the staircase, Steve pulled out his Yamaha Pocketrack 2G and hit the record button-

"ERM... <heavy breathing> JUST LEFT DAD'S GRAVE.. DOING A HEALTHY JOG BACK DOWN TO MY CAR... NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT..."

Tilting her head instinctively, the light seemed to be doing it's job as the faded black letters of kanji spelled out a single legible name - SUGAWARA... Rei hesitated for a moment, attempting to discern when or if she had ever heard the name mentioned before. It was certainly a rather curious find, one that Rei would have no choice but to look into as a scholar and student of history. Returning the old sotoba to lean on the old gravestone with as much care and respect as one was capable of, she was about to offer a pray for the deceased, but was stopped short of her actions.

In the still quiet of the evening, the heavy footsteps and snapping of twigs sounded like a gunshot. Almost instantly, Rei's crimsons eyes snapped around to the source, which to her general horror was much closer that she ever allowed most to get. Oh crap... Rei was mentally cursing at herself for being so absorbed in her studies not to have sensed the intruder, but then another thought hit her that nearly caused her blood to run cold in realization.

If they had managed to get that close, what had they seen? Oh no. Oh no, no, no! This was bad, if they had witnessed her using her abilities so freely, then she was in a massive amount of trouble. What if they had seen her face? What if they could recognize her? After all, she didn't look like most people and if they went to police- No, the cops would never take a case like that seriously, but what would happen if they alerted someone like a monk? She wouldn't stand a chance.

No! She had to stop them, if only to even the playing field. Perhaps there was a way to convince them to never talk about what they had seen and protect herself. Darting quickly through the tombstones and onto the nearby path, Rei took off after the noise, but did not have to go far. This was a big graveyard and no sooner had she reached the staircase than she spotted the quickly moving figure that was making a bee-line for the exit.

'Oh, no you don't!' Rei thought silently, snapping her fingers and causing several tongues of flame to appear from thin air some distance ahead of male figure, cutting off his escape route along the path out of the cemetery. Within seconds of the first few flames, several more began to appear, encircling the young man and ensuring that there was no where to run. "If your smart, you will put that phone away. I don't want to have to torch it, but I will do whatever is necessary to protect my identity." Rei called out, her tone deadly serious about the matter.

Without hesitation, she started down the stairs at a more leisurely pace, making sure to keep an eye to make sure that intruder didn't bolt again. She made for quite a sight, however, with that black coat and white hair that seemed to give off an inhuman glow in the contrast of the blue lights. Moving to remove her glasses as she reached the bottom step, she quickly slid them into her pocket, before allowing a cheerful smile in greeting.

"Forgive the fireworks! I'm afraid I don't know your name, but I'm going to have to ask you a few questions. I'm sure you wouldn't mind, right? After all, it's not every day a young lady asks you to hang out for a bit." Despite the calmness in her voice and general cheerful composure, there clearly seemed to be a vague threat hiding in those last words. This was clearly no playful request. If he wanted to walk out of the graveyard without having something scorched, then he would behave himself and start talking.

Secretly thanking all his workout sessions for his peak physical condition, Steve was actually quite surprised himself as to how fast he was descending them steps. He was jumping three steps with each stride, the wind was sending his hair and jacket back like as if in free-fall, and the scenery was zooming pass diagonally like he had never seen before.

<FIRE>

"HOLY SHIT!"

As any normal human being would, Steve skidded to a halt on a flat piece of intersection ground between the sections of stairs when several big ass blue fireballs burnt his escape route into oblivion.

THAT WAS AIMED AT ME RIGHT? A NEW TYPE OF FLAMETHROWER?! NAPALM?! WHY.. WHY WOULD ANYONE AIM FOR ME? WHAT THE HELL DID I DO?!

At this point it wasn't really a question of courage, it was simply a necessity to identify the source of danger that finally made Steve turn around.

<ENCIRCLING FLAME APPEARS>

Creating some sort of light-show effect sending long shadows into rotation all around Steve, the fire had kind of left him in a lost state at this moment. Why? Well, when all Steve saw was some albino girl lacking any types of sensible equipment that would logical generate fire, the only explanation now would be that he was dreaming no?

Steve pinched himself on the cheek.

OW.

Nope. Still a dream.

"If your smart, you will put that phone away. I don't want to have to torch it, but I will do whatever is necessary to protect my identity."

Phone? What phone? Aha... of course she wouldn't make sense.. it's a dream.. Duh. Well, since it's not real, Steve suddenly felt more daring than usual, immediately removing any sign of his nervous demeanor and putting on his celebrity image, something he was very good at and did daily anyways-

Trailing one hand through his hair to lead up to an annoyed-looking and arguably-seductive glare at the albino girl, Steve spoke authoritatively-

"First of all, if you were smart, you would have realize with whatever limited vision you possessed that this-"

Steve raised his hand with his Yamaha Pocketrack 2G still in his grip, but in such a way that he was ready to put it out of harms way should the girl attempt some sort of attack-

"-is not a phone, and secondly, I have zero desire to know who you are... But tell me anyways - are you some elite kidnapper sent to get me? If so I'd like to warn you about who exactly you're dealing with."

Confidence was all over Steve's face... but his legs were kind of shaking... just a bit.

To say that Rei was a little annoyed would have probably an understatement by this point. It wasn't everyday that her identity as an oddity was compromised and she had no intention of just letting him walk away, not without getting some things clear, such as what would happen to him if he ever breathed a word of this encounter to anyone, human or otherwise. Now, Rei normally wasn't what many would consider a violent person, but fox's were known to be territorial and crossing them was certainly not a wise move.

Unfortunately, when the young man turned to face her, it became painfully clear that he was either very arrogant or possibly highly self-absorbed. Was he really going to argue the specific of the device when he was standing in front of a supernatural entity? Maybe he was stupid... or perhaps he simply wasn't taking her seriously, a matter that Rei intended to rectify quick immediately. Fine. Then perhaps it was time to make clear exactly what he was dealing with and why he should mind his manners.

"I care little for the toys that humans carry around these day, but if there's so much as a shred of video of myself or the light phenomenon you witnessed, make no mistake that I will turn it into a very expensive pile of ash." Rei explained a bit coldly, her tone giving all to obvious command that the oddity rarely resorted to. Things only appeared to get worse as the young man accused her of being some kind of kidnapper.... Wow, he really was delusion, wasn't he?

"Kidnapper? Tsk, don't insult me. I assure you that if I wanted a man, I wouldn't be in a cemetery and I certainly wouldn't have to resort to kidnapping." She shot back, flashing a confident smile at the accusation that she was some common criminal. Oh no, that wasn't how kitsune worked. They were notorious good at bewitching and luring in men, but clearly she was not here to seduce him. Rei cared little for his status or popularity in human society, rather oblivious to who he really was and giving far less care about who he claimed to be.

Nonetheless, his demand to know who she was and who he thought himself to be caused her brow to furrow slightly in annoyance. Where did this cocky snot get off bossing her around? "As for who I am.... I don't really have an obligation to answer that question. Besides, didn't anyone ever tell you that it's rude to ask for someone name without first giving your own." Rei explained straightly, her old manner of speaking betraying her somewhat as she raised a hand, allowing the blue flames to twist around her fingers in a bored manner.

Her red eyes remained on the young man seriously, though a sigh soon escaped her in discontent. "I will tell you, however, that I like my privacy, so whatever you saw earlier, whatever you think you witnessed, you will keep it silent. Do we have an understanding?" The fox spoke, clearly in no mood to argue about the matter. "I dislike the idea of using violence, but I value my freedom above all else and I will not tolerate any threat to that by having my presence broadcast to others." Rei added calmly,though the words held a dangerous meaning.

"So, let us make a deal, shall me? Give me your word that you will not tell a soul about me or what you have seen, and you may leave to pretend this never happened. However, before you speak, be aware that you are speaking to a fox. Should you break your oath to me, I promise there will be hell to pay." She suggested, though this probably should have been expected. Foxes were well-known for making deal with humans and were held to a certain code, so the young man had nothing to worry. The question was whether or not he would be smart enough to take the deal or fool enough to further provoked the female kitsune.

Humans? These days? How old is she? A thousand?

Steve was pretty certain she wouldn't find a guy anywhere with that kind of attitude. Shame though, she does have a pretty face.

Well... that was the point- Being rude. Did she already forget that she just threw fire at him? Fire hurts...

Currently, Steve was just busy being amazed at his subconscious imagination for creating such a character within his dream for him to deal with. Something like a boss level from a game? Now he just had to figure out how... after all, everyone knows that dreams had no consequences-

"So, let us make a deal, shall me?"

Shall me? Huh? By now Steve wasn't really paying attention since she was talking way too much in one go and honestly Steve just can't keep up-

"Give me your word that you will not tell a soul about me or what you have seen, and you may leave to pretend this never happened. However, before you speak, be aware that you are speaking to a fox. Should you break your oath to me, I promise there will be hell to pay."

Finally she stopped talking. Steve blinked several times while looking in random directions to collect his thoughts, before speaking in a more professional tone than before while pacing back and forth-

"You talk big spirit thing, so big that I'm starting to really question it. Also, if you were as you say so keen about protecting your freedom, then why the hell would you even use your magic in a god damn public cemetary? Could it be you're just a huge klutz? Anyways, I'm probably just going to forget all about you when I wake up, s-"

<LOUD BARKING>

A large black dog abruptly entered the scene from the woods that lie on both sides of the long staircase and stood viciously with fangs baring in front of Steve with its eyes glaring sharply at the magical girl with what seemed like hostile intent. Steve immediately jumped back in fright like a little girl but it completely ignored him for some reason.. so Steve's demeanor returned quickly to what it was as if the jump never happened. Looking at it again, Steve noticed that It had a lease on but nobody to hold it...

<GROWLING>

A run away hound? Hoooh! A dream guardian to vanquish the witch!

Steve was pretty excited how things were turning out, but other than the possibility of it being his dream guardian, it had most likely come from the monastery beside the graveyard-

"KAITOOOOOOO!!-- <cough cough>"

A call from the distance can be heard, most likely a monk running after his loose pet. If everything continues as it is, the monk would enter the clearing which is the staircase in about fifteen seconds.

Steve looked to the girl to see what she would do.
