The still of the evening had set in some time ago as the sun had drifted down into the distant horizon, that was now disappointing obscured by the buildings and the trees. That was one of the downsides to living in the city. The true glory and perfection of nature was constantly overshadowed, slowly pushed farther and farther into smaller oasis of solitude and serenity. It was in one such location that Rei now found herself. The Shinjuku Gyoen was a well-known landmark in Tokyo with a rather rich history, a fact not lost on the history major. Unfortunately, she had never cared much for crowds and as of late, had taken to roaming these more remote locations by moonlight, as there were fewer people to disturb her research. There was also a certain appeal to viewing something from the past in the light of the moon and gave it a certain sense of wonder that was otherwise missed during the daylight hours. Now most normal young women would have avoided the risk of wandering the streets as night, but as Rei had recently discovered, she was no longer normal or even human for that matter. Nevertheless, she continued to carry on her existence as though nothing had changed. After all, fox or not, one could not simply retreat into the ever shrinking wilderness as the creatures of legend had. No, if history had taught her anything, it was that adaptation was pivotal to survival. Besides, there were some perks to living in the modern world, like baths and certain foods that made it all bearable, rare as they were. In the meantime, Rei had a park to explore and swallow the sticky of Pocky that she'd been holding between her teeth, she hoisted herself up to a standing position from beneath the tree that she had been hiding under until the sun went down. With quick brush to dust away any leaves or grass that might have attached itself, Rei soon headed down the small and now sparsely bothered pathway. Humming to herself as she walked, the song seemed rather oblivious to the possible dangers or threat of criminal activity that existed in this city. The long black coat was more than enough to keep any chill away. Her curious white hair was pulled back into a long pony tail, swaying occasionally with the gentle breeze as she placed another snack stick securely between her teeth as some would a cigarette. The pace was steady and slow, in no rush. Living alone had it's advantages, such as no curfews and no trouble as long as she didn't get caught. Rei, literally, had all the time in the world to enjoy the brisk evening, exploring both the area and it's historical wonders to her heart's content. | words: 465 tag: open notes: none |
